Show #10

It's been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but if you are extremely good at what you do as a photographer than a picture is worth more than just words--its about capturing a moment- a memory (or a series of moments and memories) that will last forever!

The work of Naomi Masina is reflective of this philosophy. We are very fortunate to have her on our show this week to discuss with us her journey into the world of photography, her artistic process, what she is most passionate about, what she hopes to capture and emulate through her work.

In her own words...
I graduated with a degree in psychology. I have always loved to watch and study people. I read once that the power of an image is, it's ability to communicate silently. Over time through this wordless education I have learned this truth: we are all fundamentally more alike than we are different. Regardless of culture, race, nationality, religion, we all love, hurt, laugh, and cry. The most rewarding things about my work as a photographer are the wonderful people I get to meet around the world and the friendships that I have gained because of our meeting. My life is made more wonderful by you. It is a gift for which there are no words. ~Naomi Masina

I could go on and on about how extremely talented and passionate she is about her work, but there is no need for words, when the pictures speak for itself. Click HERE to enter into Naomi Masina's world of photography!

We will also be giving away tickets to the PALE Foundation concert on July 17, 2009 featuring Adeaze and the Laughing Samoans. Get your singing voices ready so that you can call in tonight and sing away for those awesome tickets!!!

Our Fathers Bent The Winds

Just wanted to share a poem with you from one of my heroes, the late 'Epeli Hau'ofa.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Our Fathers Bent The Winds

Only yesterday
the Sands of Sopu brightened the shores of Nuku'alofa,
horse-drawn carts crawled half-awake the green roads,
and we sent men and money to Missions abroad.
Our fathers bent the winds and strode the waves
to bring the Kula and Mothers of Kings from Upolu,
fine mats from Manu'a and the royal studs of Lakemba for the Forbidden Daughters.
And did not Maui Kisikisi pierce the horizon with his javelin?
Or the Suppressor-of-Waves speed slabs from Uvea
for the terraced tombs of the God-Kings?
But the Sands of Sopu are gone,
broken beer bottles strew the Sacred Shore,
the tennis courts from Salt Lake City marks the grave of Salote's lawn,
and the one-time nation of givers,
dreaded jaws of the ocean,
begs for the crumbs from the Eagle and the Lion.
Yesterday Tangaloa made men,
But the God of Love breeds children.

Wow, much to discuss and chew on with that piece....but for now, good night :D

peace and love,
Rich

Show #9

You know what sucks? Competing with NBA Finals for listeners. Now that it's over and the LA Lakers took the title, we invite you our former listeners to come back and join us. We ain't mad. Just a little bitter. But we have big Polynesian hearts and we are very forgiving.

Show #9 will feature our special guest attorney Laura Lui to discuss the recent ruling in the Ricky Angilau case allowing prosecutors to charge this 16 year old as an adult with first degree murder. We will also discuss other laws that were recently passed, such as the anti-immigration bill SB81 which will go into effect July 1, 2009. And if Laura feels like it, we might just take some calls!! Yay :)

Laura Lui received her B.S. in Political Science from Boston University and her J.D. from the Southwestern University Law School (SCALE Program) in Los Angeles, California in 1994.

Ms. Lui's practice focuses primarily on child welfare cases, family law, criminal defense and immigration law. She is a former public defender and deputy county attorney in Nevada. She is also a former state attorney for both the State of Nevada and State of Utah.

Additionally, Ms. Lui has experience as a criminal defense attorney in juvenile and adult systems, defending felonies and misdemeanors. Ms. Lui also has experience in immigration matters, ranging from filing petitions to defending clients involved in removal proceedings.

Ms. Lui is a member of the Utah State Bar; the U.S. District Court, District of Utah; the Utah Supreme Court; the Nevada State Bar; the U.S. District Court, District of Nevada; the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals; and the Nevada Supreme Court.

Also, tune in for the continuing saga of the musubi lei's, 'Anapesi will blame something new on colonialism, Richard's chair will squeak throughout the entire show, an evil person in California will text us evil messages complaining about something with our show, we'll play some random Polynesian music from Richard's humongous iTunes collection, and who knows what surprises will spring up during the show!

Show #8

Graduation is such a joyous time in our community; especially to see the proud faces of parents and graduates whose long years of hard work and sacrifice has paid off, but even more so for myself because I get to go from one graduation party to the next eating awesome Tongan food! So in other words, its a win-win situation for everyone! hahaha!

On our program this week, we will be speaking to Posesi Bloomfield, a Tongan native, who recently graduated from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government with a Master's in Public Administration. He has conducted tremendous work in the Pacific region and also during his time at Harvard University. We are fortunate to have him on our radio program this week!

Sione Posesi Bloomfield was born in the UK and has attended school in Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand. Bloomfield earned B.A. and L.L.B. degrees from the Australian National University (ANU) holding the distinction of being the first Tongan to earn a law degree from ANU. Bloomfield has worked in London, Canberra, Athens, Nuku'alofa (Tonga), and most recently served as attorney general of the Marshall Islands. Committed to creating a vibrant Pacific region, Bloomfield has a long-term focus on public service that is inclusive, efficient, and accountable. His particular interests include sea-level rise, sustainable marine fisheries, and promotion of regional trade.

This past week he graduated with a Masters of Public Adminstration from Harvard University. While at Harvard, he was elected to represent the Harvard Kennedy School of Government to the Harvard Graduate Council. Also an elected member of the Kennedy School Student Government. Awarded a fellowship with the Harvard Ash Foundation for Democratic Governance and Innovation, and was a fellow of the Edward S. Mason Program. Bloomfield was a founding member of the Pacific International Maritime Law Association, and a member of the law bar in Tonga, the Marshall Islands, and Australia.

We will also be discussing current events, community events and answer your email questions! Don't miss out!!!
